RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among thousands of UK service members deployed over the festive period. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military carried out what it called a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
