Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
