A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
