They're Doing to America What They Executed within Christianity

Trumpism's most illuminating and distinctive moments – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of multiple weeks, the nation's leader started showing the public his plans for a gilded ballroom twice the size compared to the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the East Wing portion to erect it.

He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of deaths resulting from his reductions to USAID amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and recently an analysis forecast his energy policies would kill an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have attempted – truly, no previous leader would have imagined – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the executive mansion to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of America's wealthiest, the majority of whom maintain dealings with the government.

We moved from 'the meek shall inherit the Earth' into 'the humble will perish of cholera'

As bewildering as it is to observe the president attempt to overturn the old idea regarding democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there is one large group of Americans who should not find it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.

We have witnessed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of compassion into a symbol of hostility who endorses specifically the brutality that he criticized in biblical teachings; this change developed at a slower pace, through multiple decades instead of months, however it is still disturbing via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for many of us.

A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself

Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus that I grew up with, because theoretically Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and because the quickly increasing segment within America may possess limited understanding about him because they identify as skeptics or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of substantial value in biblical accounts.

It is decidedly absolutely not the narrative of an authoritative monarch appearing; rather, an infant arrives to displaced parents in a storage space, who must quickly flee to another nation to escape secret police. The baby grows up in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his message is about love for fellow humans, especially for the poor – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to offer the other cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a way to teach the attacker; his crime policy indicates that whenever someone steals your jacket you should give him your sweater as well.

The obvious and direct truth that the Jesus in biblical accounts requests a type of radical love centered on the impoverished is what has always made Christian religion rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but owing to its natural unconventionality requiring to be controlled. During the 1950s it was contained via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it basically sanctified existing conditions.

A Conflict for the Best Among Us

So I have been encouraged to see the determined opposition against Trump emerge during the previous year. It has served as substantial consolation to participate in developing the movement that has protested openly in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged citizens to participate in large quantities during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags during all protests and requests to the best parts within national heritage.

We will be questioned ... how did you receive the stranger? Did you receive him and receive them or reject?

The nation is most protected, in other words, by reference to the finest within national tradition, exactly as the Christian faith is optimally secured by reference to elements that cause it to be distinctive and beautiful, specifically the model of the Savior. In both situations does it imply feigning the worst of both America and Christianity never occurred; it represents both humility and faith, a mixture that committed national faithful should be comfortable with.
