Weather Balloons Used to Illegally Transport Cigarettes Shut Down Lithuanian Airport

Recovered contraband balloons
At least 11 of the weather balloons, containing 18,000 packs of contraband cigarettes, have been collected so far

Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.

Flight Disruptions

The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.

Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.

Illegal Goods Seizure

A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.

Cross-Border Contraband Trend

Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."

So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.

Regional Consequences

Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.

Smuggling Techniques

When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."

European Tensions

Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.

Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
